CHOKE was
the swift answer to the doubters of The Beautiful South as one hit
wonders. Briana Corrigan was introduced as a fully fledged
member of the band and helped them get their only No.1 single to
date with A Little Time.
Other singles from the album included My Book and Let Love Speak Up
Itself.
The B'Side to A Little Time - What You See Is What You Get was
released as a single in Germany.

Q Review
Like The Housemartins
before them, The Beautiful South have all but taken up residency in
the singles chart in their brief lifespan-a fact not entirely
unconnected to their facility in banging out naggingly sweet and
simple pop melodies delivered by the croonsome duo of Paul Heaton
and David Hemingway. An added bonus on their second LP is the
presence of guest vocalist Brianna Corrigan, whose wonderful
heartstopping singing voice could surely melt icebergs at 50 paces.
As on last year's debut, Beautiful South (1989) songs tinker
playfully with the formulae, conventions and cliches of pop
songwriting-peer beneath the crystalline surface glow of those pop
nuggets and you are confronted by a murky undertow of domestic
violence, aberrant behaviour and more than a smidgeon of grim black
humour. Already boasting one Top 5 hit in the priceless Need A
Little Time, the LP is strewn with plenty of songs itching to follow
its upward trajectory, particularly the spendid ballad Let Love
Speak Up For Itself, the psychedelic soul goove of Tonight I Fancy
Myself, and the disconcertingly gentle pop tones of I Think The
Answer's Yes (the burning of The Stock Exchange/and bombing of The
Press/I think the answer's yes). Good to know that Paul Heaton
hasn't gone soft on us. London 0, Hull 5.**** (4 STARS)
